While not comics, they were done by a major comic book artist, so I had to put up Alex Ross' steel-book art for the new blue ray re-releases of the Universal Monsters library -

This Magazine Is Haunted was originally publ. by Fawcet Publishing & ran for 14 issues, from 1951-53. It was then picked up by Charleton Comics & ran there from 1954-58. Dr. Death was the comic's host. I love the ambitious title.

70's Atlas Comic's goodness with their Planet Of Vampires title. Looks like Atlas wasn't the only one with the same idea.

Ghost Comics published by Fiction House Publ. ran 11 issues from 1951-54. More Detective than Supernatural, the book's star, Drew Murdoch, was a L.A. Gumshoe who somehow always managed to wind up in spooksville, up to his elbows in Ghost related crime. Great early-50's covers.

Published by Comic Media from 1955-58 &, I believe, lasting only 14-15 issues, Weird Terror is sighted as one of the most influential, non-ec, horror comics pre-code. In fact, the book was shut down because of the comic code. Beautiful covers.

Published by Marvel predecessor, Atlas Comics, Adventures Into Terror ran 31 issues from 1951-54. It was an offshoot of a comic that only ran for 2 issues from a publ. I can't figure out.

Published by Key Publications from 1951 - 54, Mister Mystery was pre-horror-code. Issue 12 (1st book shown here) was used as an example linking Juvenile delinquency to comics.

What I'm noticing this year, in exploring the old, 50's comic covers, is that modern visual horror didn't start with George Romero or The Twilight Zone, Psycho, or post Caribbean/Voodoo zombie films ... it started here, in comics. These covers ring true & scary 50+ years later.

Another great pre-Marvel, Atlas Comics Supernatural Comic Book, Mystery Tales started in 1952 & ran thru the rest of the decade, sporadically. Something around 54 issues published. More whimsical than straight-up horror. Still, I feel it qualifies -
