This one turned out really great. My only issues are possible leaning and the hardhat. But everything else is amazing. The costume, the pose, the musculature and the EX portrait, home run. I think it has the perfect amount of subtle detail too, especially on the abs.

I can understand.
I was too excited about the EX to care one bit about ES.

I sometimes feel that way. Until I see an EX that I bought at full price + shipping on sale down the road for $50 off with free shipping because SS went crazy with the edition size.

I've had two scenarios.
Bought a piece that later see much cheaper.
Wait and see on a piece that later see much more.
The latter kills me far more than the former.

Though in this case I’m referring to a statue that doesn’t have an edition size listed. Has there been a case of one selling out before the edition size is set?

The way I do it nowadays is
1) wait for the edition size to be announced
2) pre-order only if the EX is a must-have and the ES is very small
3) if the ES is large then wait for production pictures before deciding.
4) if production pictures come out great then quickly order the EX

That’s a good system. I have a similar thought process.
