I never thought I'd pay this much for a commission and I'm [insert word here] I did!

All, curious to hear what ceiling you broke when paying for a commission and were you happy with the outcome? I remember back in the day $250 was my max. Nowadays $250 only gets you a 9x12 bust from most artists.

Feel free to share as much (or as little) as you would like.

My max spend was $750 for an artist that I had commissioned in the past who in my prior, less expensive, commissions he delivered stunning artwork. For this one..can't say I was thrilled with the outcome. When you average it in however with the other ones, can't complain too much.

Doubtful I will go higher than that price point unless its a legend or a very compelling artistic offer.

Are you asking the highest level commission?

And where is the $750 art?

$2000 for this Black Cat from Adam Hughes in 2010, back when he was slowing down on the copic marker con sketches and instead offering guaranteed eBay commissions. It's the highest I've paid for a commission by far. It was (still is) a lot of money for me, but I think I got good value, and Adam basically doesn't do these types of commissions at this size (14x17) or (IMO) this level of detail anymore.

Without looking, I think 1200 is the most I've paid for a commission. I've done it a few times, Tim Sale 11x17 Conan, Tim Sale 14x17 Captain America, 11x17 Gladiator Hulk vs Thor by Eduardo Risso.

My Chris Stevens painted Hulk vs Captain Marvel might be the winner. It was at least 1200, maybe 1500.

I was on the hunt for some Dell'Otto art, and I found a person who had sketches they were selling..

Layout sketches of Batman for around $700. I def. could not swallow a price like that...

A couple of months later, this same person notified me about a commission opportunity, and I said yes without skipping a beat and without even knowing how much it was going to cost.

1500 euros (about 1750 usd at the time).

I know I've done more than a few at $1000+, but I'm not 100% sure which ones. This is one I know of.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

I know my Lim two-page spread was $1,000, and this was back in 2003.

In 2000, I got a piece from Dave Cockrum for $750.

I've got a bunch in the $500ish range.

If we're counting commissions purchased second hand, I picked up a huge Giorgio Comolo piece featuring Galactus and The Celestials (from Earth-X) for $1,200, but eventually sold it (got my money back).

The absolute most I've ever paid for a commission was actually for a non comic related commission I got as a wedding gift for my wife. It was $1500 painted piece from a Danish artist named Jasper Oostland.

As for comic related works, I think the full painted Jabba the Hutt piece I got from Christopher Uminga. That one was $600 (I think). Oddly enough the Mera I got from Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, and Laura Martin equals that cost.
