What if... say five years down the line... Disney released Infinity War and Endgame as a double feature in select theatres?
Since it effectively owns both movies now, it could easily manipulate the top spot.

What's the point?
1) Disney owns Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar. It doesn't care which movie from these properties is "Number 1".
2) Inflation renders box office dick waving meaningless.
3) More and more movie theaters are being built in countries that used to not have many or any (such as Saudi Arabia). We're not comparing apples to apples across time. China is a good example of mega expansion in just the past ten years.

Plus, isn't it likely that Avatar will be returning to theaters before the sequel come out?

What if, say 5 months they do this? I'd go, for sure. Some good Holiday season viewing plans would be made!

It was announced that Avengers Endgame will be on the Disney + streaming channel as of December 11th and Blu-ray should be on sale well before that date.
Would Disney bother with a theatrical re-release at the same time as the movie dropping on their streaming channel? Maybe. I'd very likely go see a double feature Infinity War / Avengers Endgame.
December is also when movies are re-released to raise their profile for potential Oscar nominations.

1) I don't think Disney particularly cares about which franchise is number 1 as long as they can squeeze the maximum earnings out of each. Playing the films and their respective fans against each other is one way of achieving this. "#BeatAvatar"
2) Dick waving is seldom meaningless.
3) The film industry evolves constantly. Some international markets have grown tremendously, but the domestic North American market has remained essentially unchanged for the last decade. The total of all movies per years hasn't really gone up, particularly after adjusting for inflation. Films move out of theatrical release a lot sooner making room for a much more crowded market. A lot of people just wait for the films to be released for home viewing.

Box office results are interesting for me personally, but they don't really mean much about a film. Unless Endgame does end up beating Avatar, then they are very important.

Box office "matters" only when comparing movies released within four months of each other.

Good advice for yourself, especially while typing. You contradict yourself within consecutive sentences.

You obviously want it to be meaningless but it clearly isn't. There are many websites, business, forums, etc. that rate, track, discuss movie sales numbers which shows it means something, a lot, to many people. If it was meaningless we wouldn't be having this discussion and the defacto, unquestioned answer to the highest grossing movie of all time would be Gone with the Wind. Fact is, nobody really looks at it that way. Should they? Doesn't matter - they don't.
