Okay, as difficult as this is going to be coming from me, I have to say, Joann gave me a copy of New Avengers Illuminati I have to admit, it was by far THE BEST Marvel book I've read in 10 years! VERY well written dialogue, amazing characterizations, gripping storyline and very dark unfinished brooding artwork ... a 10 out of 10 in my book!

Excellent EXCELLENT read!

Because of this book I'm probably going to be picking up Civil War now.

By the way, I finally downloaded the NextWave theme song last night. Did you check that out?
j, where did you download that song from? I've been keeping up with that book, I'll give it a review next issue. Damn fine book.

And word on the Thing and USM. Someone will have to start picking it up at some point. I just found out Mark Bagely lives in Cobb County, right up the way from where I live. Hmmm, I may have to look into this further...

"New Avengers: Illuminati" review adendum

One glaring omission from my Illuminati review was Iron Man's referring to himself and Reed as futurists, which is why they're such great inventors, and how what he sees coming in the future scares him. Even before the events that trigger Civil War, with a copy of the superhero registration bill already in his hand, Iron Man predicts that some well meaning superhero is going to either make a mistake, do something stupid, or both and will create a public outcry.

Another stroke of brilliance was making the epilogue to this book the beginning segment of the upcoming Civil War. What Iron Man forsee does, in fact, come to happen, making the dark creepiness of Illuminati even more so. And the juxtaposition of Maleev's darker (though appropriately brighter than his Daredevil work) and minimalist art with McNiven's bright and detailed renderings only brings this out more. The light banter of the fledgling superteam of Civil War and seeming naive yet self serving innocence of their behavior makes the pending disaster even more awful.

What an outstanding way to put a final stamp on the terrific Illuminati book and tease the reader right into Civil War!

My pick of the week, Fantastic Four #536, is getting a second printing. See, Marvel, people ARE excited about the prospect of Thor's return!
