If it were just a few people I might agree with you, even considering that I myself am one of those who remember it and am absolutely certain of it. But instead there are dozens of people on many different and unrelated boards who remember it clearly and all the exact same way. None of whom have ever met or discussed it.

I was 16 when I saw it and certainly wasn't a little kid. The idea that a serious fan site would just put some urban legend on when they have so much other research and info on it would also really surprise me.

It was never on anything but the first reel to reel film version. Never on VHS, DVD, or any on TV showing. Somebody would have to have the original film print actually shown in theatres, which is why we don't have it.

This is not as outrageous as you make it seem - especially since there is a scene in the movie very similar to people's recollection. I suspect even a few of those people are just jumping on the bandwagon saying they remember - but who knows?

I'm not saying I am 100% certain it doesn't exist - but I am skeptical and think, with just how much technology and readily available information on every subject imaginable is, it would surely be out there somewhere.

Little extra bits at the end of credits wasn't common at all like it is today that's for sure.
Not that many people stayed until the very very end. What would be the point back then?

Those that feel positive they saw this scene,
What country and city? and theater was it in? I assume 1981 the year of release.

Let's look for a pattern if there is one.

Ford would be clueless is what I would expect and these folks don't make themselves available to fan chatter much.
The FX artists at that time who worked on the film are the ones to ask.
Richard Edlund specifically.

For a while, I was convinced I had seen that scene as well, but I think (for me at least) it's just confusion between the actual ending (with the crate being warehoused) and the scene earlier in the film on the ship when the nazi symbol 'burns' off the exterior of the crate.

If you think about it, why would they use effectively the same 'gimmick' scene in the movie twice ???
