Rian is a capable director and demonstrated this in his other film Looper.
Taking this series into new territory yet also accommodate the OT characters is no easy task and I think overall Rian did a decent job, hence, why Kathleen Kennedy hired him to write the next trilogy.

I think the writing issue started with how Force Awakens ended. A direct cliffhanger is a tricky challenge for a new writer to take over from. Star Wars has traditionally had time skips between movies to allow shifts in power or character growth to be accommodated.
This makes the issue where all we've seen from start of Episode VII to end of Episode VIII takes place roughly in a two-three week time frame.
How would I have handled it? Probably not to satisfaction of many, but here's my idea.
Subvert expectations by not opening immediately with the title crawl. Do a cold open with Rey and Luke where can establish their relationship jumping off point. Have a dramatic event or line, build the music and...
Fanfare of Star Wars theme as cut to the iconic text crawl. This explains two things. First, how the First Order went from losing Starkiller base to dominating the New Republic and crushing the resistance. Second, how Rey and Luke may have grown in time together as she has developed her skills.
