Unless your basement is climate controlled like the rest of your house, i would not put hardwood down. You do not want to glue hardwood on top of a slab. You'll have to put down a vapor barrier, install sleeper's, shim and level it perfectly, then nail down the flooring. There is a system used to install hard wood flooring on a slab that involves metal tracks bolted to the slab and metal brackets that are slid onto the track so the wood and slab can expand with out tearing apart the wood. I've only seen it used in gym's.
Engineered/ floating floor would work as long as your basement does'nt take in water. I don't know the condition of your slab but tile would be the easiest labor wise.
If you want wood flooring, look at the linoleum faux wood flooring. I installed Amtico ($9 a sf
) that was left over from a jobsite in one of my bedrooms. Your slab has to be smooth like glass because the flooring's <1/8" thick.
I don't like carpet, but it's the least expensive to supply and install. As long as you don't buy some crazy expensive stuff.
