The Jedi stuff and Rey/Luke/Kylo storyline was phenomenal and some of the best stuff in the franchise IMHO.

The "B" plot with the Resistance was hard for me to sit through and Laura Daren's character was unlikable and wooden enough that I didn't care if the First Order destroyed them.

The casino planet gave me flashbacks to the Prequels, which is not a good thing. Rose was unnecessary and did feel like an affirmative action add on; (and I say that as a PoC). Honestly Finn and Poe going on that mission would have made the story flow better and had more chemistry.

I do give them full props for bold choices and abandoning the typical SW tropes. They had to rip off the band aid at some point; for that alone I feel it's superior to TFA.
All in all it was a great 90 minute film undermined by a 150 minute one imho.
Good review. While I happened to enjoy the film a little more this is great objective review.

Maybe we'll find out that the grumpy, hobo of a man on the island was Luuke Skywalker and not Luke Skywalker.

Loved Star Wars my entire life. They ruined the Luke character, made him an attempted child murderer then when he is supposed to be brooding and dark, he's making tickle me elmo jokes? The milking cow scene, WTF? Terrible writing, what a disservice to the character. Everyone being a comedian was just dumb. The vegas planet was pointless. Snoke? Knights of Ren? Rey's parents? Kylo's mask? Phasma? All gone in one fell swoop, guess no one was interested in any of that. A useless love story with Fin and some character no one cares about? Awesome. Yoda, a cackling idiot that can call down lightening from the dead? Flying Leia? The force face time and astral projection Luke, a cop out for weak story.

I really do think I might actually hate this movie. Lol.

Oh well.

Am I fool for hoping that JJ can turn this around? I liked TFA but it wasn't great. The development of TFA was obviously rushed. TFA has some interesting new ideas, but the lack of good exposition on the state of the galaxy (well described in the book) and the Starkiller Base were the weak parts.

RJ had a ton of time to develop and make the TLJ but still had sloppy logic plot holes and pacing issues. As well as the TLJ not being true to the characters that were establish in the prior 4 movies.

Now JJ has to slap together another movie after Colin Trevorrow was fired after being attached to Episode 9 for two years. In addition to the lost development time, he needs to try rebuild the goodwill lost in RJ's TLJ and complete a trilogy in the poor state RJ left the heros.

I don't know. I just don't know. At this point, I don't think Episode 9 has a chance at being good.

I don't think it can be saved, JJ may just give it a 'LOST' ending and not give a rip.

I actually didn't mind the ending itself, it was numerous unresolved plot holes that irritated me, just like The Last Jedi.

I think the misconception is that these movies were going to be about Luke and the Rebels again, and it isn't. Just because The Emperor and Vader are dead that doesn't mean the Empire died completely. I took the First Order as a rising of a faction of the Empire that was not eradicated, maybe one even more radical than the Empire.

Luke obviously tried to restart the Jedi order, but as he said, in his own vanity being a "Legend" did not see what was happening under his nose. In a fleeting moment he thought about killing his own nephew. Something he even says he was remorseful for the second he thought it, and the fact that he lost Ben was such a powerful thing that he closed himself off, thinking himself as unworthy.

I think people aren't giving this film a chance, they just aren't getting what they thought or what they wanted and dismissing it. Nothing I've seen goes against character for any of them, even Luke succumbing to a momentary lapse in judgement he's immediately remorseful about isn't out of character, as a matter of fact if you look at his reckless mistakes in Empire and A New Hope it's something he's struggled with.

Now if Luke had actually tried to kill Ben, different story and I'd get all the anger. But he didn't.
As i said before i don't care about the new characters so If it's not about the classic Star Wars characters that i care about then i don't care. The Star Wars ended for me at Episode 6.

I can't assume anything for the First Order, they should have showed me, or at least some character should have given information about how things turned out like this.

I don't like how they turned look into a hobo to make the new characters shine... If he trained Rey properly, i may be more ok about a tourch pass... But He trained Rey for 3 days or something... It's like a Joke, she is considered a Jedi with just 3 days training... And can use force and saber very well... Such a bull----. What happened to padawan training starting from age 5 or something ? bah... Rey is such a merry sue. And i don't care about her anyway.

Wasn't Luke on Dagobah for like 3 days?

If it was the filmmaker's intention it was certainly lost on me.

Reminds me of the crap leveled against Lucas that the way the Neimoidian's and Gungan's spoke in The Phantom Menace was racist. Gimme a break! Sometimes I think viewers take their personal biases in with them and they see what they want to see.
I know what you mean but it did take some thinking for me. When I watched the movie I was slightly annoyed by the conscious effort made to overrepresent certain groups yet I came to the conclusion that really that's what the alliance represents. The minority freedom fighters against the big white male machine. Down with middle class white males with British accents!
