Heh, no not clay (although I believe you can get ones that use plaster (or at least powder that forms into plaster somewhere along the way). Haven't used one myself yet but I believe you load it up with resin (or powder I think) and it 'prints' the 3d model that you've made layer by layer. Picture a cake piping bag that is controlled by a computer moving back and forth / side to side but with a much more accurate tip. That's one type anyway - the process the machine uses can vary particularly if you are using different materials e.g metal etc. Have a look on youtube when you get home. All pretty simple but just not something you tend to hear about/see much info on very often. They're pretty cool.
Sure someone else can cast more light on it. Erick has one in house I believe.
