Swearing In The Court Of Law

I like LA Law, Ally McBeal and Boston Legal.

I have been brought up believing it is wrong to swear. Considering USA is a christian country, I neverstood why you swear in the Court of law?

Why is it that in the Court they have the bible in there hands and say

"Do you solemnly swear or affirm that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"

When Te Bible Matthew 5:33-37 says

"33 Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."

Why is it that the American Court goes against the bibel?

Even though this thread touches on religious subjects I hope this thread willl stay as it's as much a thread in understanding how America Works and thinks, or at least parts of it.

Swear as used here means to take an oath and not to use offensive words. The history of that tradition can be found via google searches. Some now make affirmations to tell the truth.

In terms of going against the bible, I would say that is a matter of interpretation.

I would like to post on another question about law.
according to law, you need register by local government, get a religious or traditional webbing.
but the point is if the webbing only got a half. you can claim that not done. so you can divorce at any time and need not pay to spouse.

In the Tobey Maguire Spiderman, they used traditional webbing.
However, in the cartoons, they didn't. It was manufactured webbing.
The choice of webbing is a constant source of controversy.
