I've seen clips from both movies.

Both appear to feature blue creature(s) with similar eye, nose design. From what i've read, Shape of Water is the better movie.
Avatar, as a friend of mine pointed out, is a film that could have an hour shaved off of it, as it was stretched out for no good reason.
