Had to look up the sculptor. No wonder I find many XM pieces lackluster. He also did the recent Juri and Ken from PCS. They're good sculpts, but not that great, to shell out the extra cash for XM.

The bird looks good, but I have to say I'm real glad I cancelled. The portraits look very, very basic. Like they remind me of the original Phoenix portraits.

I didn’t realized you canceled. Why? The long wait so you were tempted by more P1 pieces?
I think they did look at the seams on the bird. Much less noticeable now, but that may also be due to lower def photos. Either way I have her on order and plan on keeping her. SS’ version did nothing for me while the XM softer portraits with her just basic hair is the perfect crazy DP Jean for me.
I will say the best female portraits we have are on Storm. No other statue has come close to that for XM. So whomever is painting/sculpting those should be used a hell of a lot more often.

I think this looks excellent myself, and can't see why anyone would be unhappy with any of the portraits here. The sinister one is properly sinister, and the other two are good counterpoint to it.
All relate well, or aren't discordant to, the overall body attitude (i.e. the body isn't in a strenuous action pose which would make a placid, or no expression, face incongruous).
They aren't done in a style of more realism ala the new SS Starfire, but that's not necessarily a bad thing to my eyes. And all three are an improvement in that area over XM's early female efforts like Black Widow.
About the only thing I would criticize is the extra crispy color choice of the flame bird's wing tips. Something ephemeral and transient like fire is hard to represent in a physical form that will generate hard cast shadows. Painting something to look burned takes that even further away.
But then again, maybe that was the point though? To make it firmly look like a physical object since any hard sculpt could never truly look like a shape made up of impermanent flame?
Anyways, I'm envious of those of you who can afford this one.
I think your wait will have been well worth it. I can't envision any other Dark Phoenix coming close to this one for a long time, if ever.

Yeah, she's got that bored look to her like the 1/6 WW. The angry portrait seems fine though and the teeth aren't toothpaste like Catwoman.

When I look at these portraits I don't see basic at all. All of them look stunning.
