Dave Hoover- A word of caution

Since cautionary tales are posted here I'll post some information of a deal gone long with artist Dave Hoover. I originally posted this on the Comic Art yahoo group back in June of 2010 but I thought it could bear repeating.

Quote:
Well, I'm getting this out in the open as I've essentially given up and don't
want others to fall into false promises...

Back before NY Comic Con 2009 (Feb 6-8 2009) I had chatted with an artist via
deviantart (Dave Hoover) to get a colored convention sketch, one he'd work on at
home ahead of the convention so he can get a bunch done before the show. So I
put $30 down for the sketch with the agreement I'd pay the rest at the show when
I pick it up.

NYCC 09 came and he wasn't there Friday nor Saturday. I messaged him over DA, he
was feeling sick and would do his best to make it Sunday. Sunday however he
similarly never arrived.

Afterwards I messaged him a few times before finally getting an answer that he'd
have it done shortly as he's been swamped with work. (this way back in
May...2009)

Since then I've messaged him numerous times with no response.

An interesting function on deviantart, much like many types of e-mail is that
sent messages have little identifiers to let you know if the person you sent a
message to has read the message. While not all the messages I've sent him have
been read one I sent him 31 weeks ago (sometime in Novemember) has indeed been
read by him.

Now perhaps on deviantart he receives many messages? I made sure to also e-mail
him at his only known e-mail at the moment, similarly no reply...

Then I decided to look up his work and saw he was once represented on
comicarthouse.com and decided to ask at the site worker if he could contact him
or had any contact with him. He similarly let me know he's had similar issues
with Dave.

I also asked someone who some time ago posted a piece he ordered from Hoover
with a similar story that he had contacted him multiple times and it had taken
him 10 months or so before receiving his piece.

Now I've still received no word from Dave and honestly believe at this point he
simply doesn't want to complete the work or perhaps will not ever do so. It's
particularly irritating when I'm able to see that he uses deviantart regularly,
posting new art and sketches he's done rather often.

Just felt like giving a warning for those out there. I've sat on it and
questioned if it was worth letting others know but decided to do so.
I've since then received the piece as you can see in my attachment.

All in all by the time I received the piece and the convention it took about 1 year and 9 months.

Feb 10, 2009- November 21, 2010.

For those skipping the story for any reason I wouldn't have minded the wait had I been kept in touch with though that was also a bit irresponsible given I was told it'd be ready and done by the con to pick up.

Since then Dave's seems to be doing commissions on a more regular pace so I can hope my experience was just a really bad time for him but regardless I thought it'd be good to let folks know.
