Statue repair Tutorial - Cavetroll

Hey All, rather than have everyone scroll through the pages to see, I thought I would put them togther in order so that it's easier for someone to follow or print.

I understand that the elbow snapping on the Sideshow Cavetroll fullsize statue can be something that happens to a few of you. I figured that since I am repairing this for Matt, you all may get some use out of seeing what is involved in this repair in case you wanted to try this on your own..

The Cavetroll, as you know, is hollow cast cold cast. I noticed that the resin was quite thin along the wall of the inner bicept. First I started by taking AVES Apoxie Sculpt and put a layer down to thicken the inner wall to provide some added strength. The hollow casting of the elbow/forearm ends at the lower elbow and on the bicep side it ends up into the shoulder, so these areas need to be backfilled with material. Because the area in not too deep (only about 2 inches of so) at the elbow, I decide to back fill that with AVES for maximum strength and set a hex head 3/8" x 5" bolt with a threaded end into it. Then I cemented the bolt into place with Plastic Welder (this has a 4500 lbs psi strength).

The bicept is filled with a very hard rigid foam from Smooth-On called Foam-It Rigid. After the two hour cure time, I drilled out a hole that the bolt will then slide up into and be cemented with Plastic Welder.

The arm is cemented into place and this is what will need to be filled and resculpted:

OK, here the AVES work is done...or just about. I may need to go back and feather sand the edges for a smooth seamless look. But the skin textures are in and ready for primer.

OK, after a quick spot prime, I custom mixed up the colors needed to retouch the area. Here it is.......... painted and done.........

I apologize for the final pics, I have a bit of "yellow cast" over these final photos due to taking these pics at night. But you get the idea.
