The challenge when having a diverse tone is pleasing everyone. I've enjoyed most episodes, but there have been some that don't appeal to me as much.

Seth MacFarlane does have a bit of a "naughty" side to him and he tends to push the limits of it on his shows/movies, I think he can get away with it more with Family Guy but I'm not sure fans of Orville will enjoy it as much, I think most fans want more of the style of TNG with some dry humor but not going overboard with it, IMO the whole porn addiction with Bortus was to over the top for this type of show IMO...

The only episode I didn’t share with my 11-year-old.

Agreed. It was too much. Funny for a while but too much in the end. I prefer the serious episodes, like 3 and 4 of this season.

...or maybe they're really going the extra mile for that TNG feel...shades of Tasha Yar.
I wondered about that also. It did seem odd that the female security officer is the first regular character to be written out of the show, just like what happened to Tasha in TNG. At least she wasn't killed by a sadistic pool of tar.

Terrible episode. Not a fan of the new security girl at all...like her even less after this episode. The show really needs Alara in it. She was the heart.

I'm definitely not enjoying this season as much as the first, but next week's looks to be promising, and it still overall is a well written show imo. Not too disappointed, just a little bit.

I really hated how she handled the situation. And all this "I was doing my duty!" I'd have loved it if the exact opposite of that ending happened. I think that is what we all wanted to see. To see her risk everything to help a total stranger escape because she really cared for him. Instead, she was like, "Well, sucks to be you. Later dude."

Locar framed Klyden for murder. If he went free an innocent person would have been incarcerated or potentially executed based on local customs.

Imagine you're an attorney and have a client who is accused of a crime. He is innocent, and is also an awful bigot. You don't ignore base rights because someone holds terrible world views.

Talla didn't take this decision lightly, she was clearly emotionally effected and hates Klyden and his attitude.

This episode shows the challenge of a diverse union of species and could be setting up a falling out with Moclus. Do you hold to your values and potentially risk war and millions of lives lost or play the long frustrating game of gradual change?

Agreed.

I still think the show is missing something since Alara left. I went back and watched season 1 again and she had so many great episodes. Maybe one day she will return but so far not a fan of Talla at all. I find her very annoying.
