My favorite BRAND is Smooth-On. Which material? ...depends on what I'm making and what qualities I want in the finished piece. The question you pose is way too open ended.

I've had the best results with Smooth On as well. I wanted a longer working time so I used Smooth Cast 310 which gave me 20 minutes before it began to set up.
The big strength with Smooth-On is the vast variety of molding/casting materials they offer....there's almost no combination that you could possibly want that they don't cover...the best part is they can help you with compatibility too.
Their website is a treasure trove of information as well.
BTW if you've seen their new sculpting compound called Free-Form. I can tell you it's very much like Apoxie Sculpt that is HIGHLY filled. It even smells like Apoxie. Interesting stuff though and I've yet to mix it with Apoxie but at some point I will to see if I can adjust the density....may have some interesting results.
