the silver lining here, is that the full story line of the manga can be explored - something that the anime could never do due to time

each book is 500 pages, 6 books, equals 3000 pages. you try fitting that into 90 minutes!
There's a lot of subplot about the clowwn and the gangs if I remember correctly. And not to mention Akira who is barely touched upon in the film
