Do you slab?
so, recently started collecting slabbed books. honestly, probably only really getting them for investments. how many of you guys buy graded books or submit them yourselves for grading? i joined collectors society late '12 and have made 4 submissions so far. just curious.

I don't. I own a few slabbed books that I bought post-slabbing (that sounds gross), but I've never sent anything in. I'm still not a fan of the idea that I can never flip through the book again, ever.

I slab variants if I want to protect the cover art. I'm buying up the Milo Manara variants from Marvel now and I'll probably get those slabbed.

I don’t slab myself, at least not yet. I have never been a big fan of the concept but I am starting to reconsider for a small percentage of my collection. I have a few key books that are in exceptional condition that are hard not to slab due to the potential value. I would consider buying lower quality copies of anything I slab so that I can still read it. My biggest hangup is probably the idea of sending something valuable away for grading – I just can’t get over the down side if something would happen to the books.

You submit an insurance estimate when you do it. CGC is pretty good the few times I've done it.

I've done it a few times when I used to go to my LCS who was registered with CGC. I'm definitely all for slabbing KEY books since grading is subjective. There's been many times where I've bought "raw" books, usually from eBay, and not been satisfied with either the grading or the damage that it got during shipping.

Have you been happy with the grades returned on your books?

I order my books from midtown and dcbservice who send books that are in great shape. Last time I sent in about 25 books and 20 of them were 9.8, 4 were 9.6, and one was 8.4.
That probably isn't enough of a sample size to give you an idea of what to expect by that's my experience.
