Custom X-Men VS Sentinel Dioramas

Hey everybody (I always feel like Dr. Nick when I say that in my head), I didn't originally intend to make a thread on this but I figured why not really.
One of the managers I work with is a big collector of statues like these, and had the opportunity to pick up a broken limited edition X-Men VS Sentinel (the one with the glowing eyes and sparks). The damage was mainly limited to Colossus, his right leg was broken in half at the knee, along with about 40 deep scratches/chips. I wish now that I took some photos of it fully broken before I filled in the damage with Apoxie Sculpt but I'll post what I have. Once I got a feel for the apoxie and polystone I asked him if he was happy with how Cyclops looked, not being a fan of that costume myself, and he agreed and wanted a resculpt to the classic 90's costume. He also has asked that I resculpt the Logan on X-Men VS Sentinel #3 to the X-Force costume of Wolverine, with the mask on, and a colour change for Shadowcat. So, I've never done any work like this before, but I'm quite confident it will turn out quite well.

In the photos you can see that the head and face of Colossus was damaged pretty good, I had to resculpt a chunk of his right brow and hair, as well as his right ear. The right leg was only held together by the wires running through the statue, so I drilled holes and glued in pegs to supplement the lost structural integrity.

Cyclops has had the rough pass on removing the raised gold lines that were originally on the costume that aren't on the 90's version.

Logan, has had a rough pass to shave down the shirt lines and remove his hair and dog tags.

looks like you got your work cut out for you bro but looking forward to the end result, especially the xforce wolverine

everyone works different but ive always found it very helpful to strip the paint before reworking the sculpt, just makes things a lot easier imo - good luck!

I was wondering if it wasn't better as I've started without having stripped it. It is at times hard to tell when I've got the form of the apoxie to match that native shape I'm replacing. What reason do people usually pre-strip the paint for SONICobra?

well again, its personal preference but heres why I like stripping the paint before working on the statue:
- you don't know how much or how little primer is on the existing statue
- I use safety solvent to work aves mostly, it makes a mess with paint
- removing the paint gives you a clean slate, allows you to repair any imperfections without any guess work
- if you sculpt over existing paint you run the chance of it not adhering to the statue properly

as for being able to tell where youre sculpting I use a single spot light above where im sculpting. having a bare statue makes it much easier to see the sculpt. I use the spot light to create shadows on the sculpt as I move it around and I can see the shape of the sculpt easier. i do this when im finish sanding or detailing, otherwise I use a lot of light. hard to describe but ill try to post pictures.

again, its all personal preference if you find it easier the way youre doing rock on bro

It's been a long time coming, started this project in 2015 and let it sit there and collect more dust than I ever thought I would. And 2018 I finally got the motivation and sat myself down and put in the time to get this thing done. I'm now 99% complete, a few belt buckle details to put in still and that's it. Came out about as good as I could expect, I've never done this before, works with material I'd never used in a style I've never done. I learned a lot on this project and look forward to the next.

A lot of things I could have done better, learned the hard way but the important thing is that I learned from everything I did. Or didn't do for that matter. Such as an earlier comment suggestion of stripping the paint before working on this.

Inspired by Duke Fleed's custom work. I saw images of his on Google image and suggested I do the same after I did the initial repairs... Didn't Think I would still be working on this 3 years later. Props to Duke: http://www.statueforum.com/showthread.php?t=135091
