Power outage flash
Just had a quick outage 1 to 2 seconds and it screwed up all my electronics seemingly. All are on surge protectors except modem and one of my directv boxes was making a weird noise wtf? Modem looks dead too

Laptop won’t turn on, av receiver turning off by itself and I think directv box is fried. No bad weather besides being hot.

That sounds like quite the surge. Can't say I've experienced anything like that before.

Sounds like a single-phase power outage. A wire is down somewhere.
Ideally you should shut off your main breaker, but at the least, I'd unplug major appliances until all lights come back on brightly. Then it should be safe to plug back in. Sounds like you already suffered some damage though.

Hope they're ok. It's nigh impossible getting reimbursed by a power company. They have limited liability.

Phew I think everything's working. I'm surprised because last night my laptop wouldn't turn on being unplugged and the Directv box making crazy noises.
And yeah that would be BS if the power company caused damage and wouldn't pay but not surprised to hear that. I've read some people having success suing. Thanks for the well wishes Zen!

One example where insurance could come in handy even for renters. But you would have to read the limits on things like electronics so that if you exceeded the limit you buy a separate rider to cover the cost of damaged electronics.
If a homeowner you may want to consider installing a whole house surge protector to prevent future possible damage.
