Drill Baby Drill?

I was just wondering what board members' thoughts were on the recent Gulf oil rig disaster? Offshore drilling was a big campaing issue and became sort of a catch phrase/rally cry for McCain and Palin. Even president Obama seemed to support increased offshore drilling. Here at home on the BC coast there has always been discussions for potential offshore drilling. Our Liberal party supported it and it seemed like a viable means to more jobs and greater revenue for the province. I was never in one camp or the camp but after the recent disaster on the Gulf coast I would be totally opposed to any drilling of the BC coast.

There is no escaping the hard energy reality we need more domestic oil, so get used to that idea right now.
It's not going to change for a long time.

Are we ill prepared for accidents?
Can we improve safety?
Can we reduce the chances this doesn't happen again?

Yes
Yes
Yes

Drill baby drill?
YES!
It's not a joyful charge I take on that.
It's a do the math logical kind of decision.

Also there are land based fields off limits now.
We need to open those up.

Also build more nuclear power plants.
Also we should be pushing harder for nuclear fusion breakthroughs and other revolutionary game changers.

Alternative solutions are not up to the task right now.
Nor will they be. We need the next big leap.

Of course, we all do. Terribly so.
Who will stop driving their cars though because of feeling sorry?
Or stop buying plastics products?

If you don't live in the area to volunteer.
I am sure some charitys will be forthcoming soon to donate to help clean up and care for the wildlife.
Hopefully it won't be as bad as some are predicting.
But I surely will contribute to efforts in ways I can.

Yes we do need the oil but NOT until these oil rigs are safer. There needs to be a fool proof method to shut the flow of oil so it WON'T spill into the ocean. Until then I will gladly pay a little more for gas!

Current alternative solutions were never meant to replace oil, but to supplement it. As money pours into development of alternative sources, research and development will improve them tremendous amounts, like what happens with every industry. Solar power in particular is very inefficient and improving it would have massive results.

As for this current situation, it's an utter disaster. It was only a matter of time until one of these rigs suffered massive problems.

When you're not willing to spend $500k on a safety device and you're employing some garbage contractors (you would've thought people would've learned their lesson not to employ Halliburtion), it was unfortunately inevitable.

It's looking like this will be surpassing Exxon Valdez by quite a bit, so I'd hope public outrage picks up on this one, the situation is incredibly serious.

Solar power doesn't make freight trains, passenger and cargo aicraft, fire trucks, military vehicles, heavy construction equipment, or freighter ships move.
It doesnt make plastics either. People forget about where all their plastic products come from. Even hybrid cars are filled with plastics.
We will have to drill for oil off shore no matter how great solar power gets. In fact, we may always need oil if for the simple reason we need plastics.

China drills off the Cuban coast, so there are things utterly beyond our control there too.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

These oil wells are obviously too big to fail, or even exist, when one failure can do so much damage. Why even bother drilling for oil there when such rigs could be used to harness the vast power of oceanic currents? It makes no sense because we are trapped by bad decisions made long ago by dead people.
