Waste Mold Tutorial

Please don't be insulted if you all already know this stuff... But I figured I would give back a little and post a quickie tutorial on how to make waste molds for transferring that pesky castilene or sculpey project in to wax gold...

In order to make a waste mold you need to have a few things.

Foam core board (or a similar rigid substitute... Carboard box will even work. HEY they aren't supposed to be pretty)

Hot glue gun

Duct Tape

There will be other needs in part 2 where we will actually transfer the piece but right now we just want to make the box mold.

First you need to loosely measure how much space you want to have around your piece. I have about 1/2 inch which should be plenty for what I need here. The object is to use as little silicone as possible and yet still get a good enough mold.

Next you will need to cut and assemble the rest of your box. I do this one side at a time. Use the glue gun to melt glue onto all relevant sides that you will attach.

Make sure you leave yourself a clue of where you will cut the piece out of the mold by marking it. Here I chose the back of the hand as there is much less I could screw up on the original as well as a flatter surface to cut along.

There your basic box mold is assembled. Not too pretty but trust me it will do the job. Only one thing left to do and it's just to be safe.

Let's use duct tape to sure up any seems that the glue might not have secured. We don't want silicone leaking out of everywhere now do we. Tape the outside of your mold at every seem, both sides and bottom. (Everywhere the box connects)

Ladies and gentlemen... we now have a wastemold ready to make your wax dreams come true. I will post the actual transfer process this weekend to complete this mini tutorial.

Good luck to all of you who have been wondering about making the leap on one of your pieces to wax.

Hey there Kieth!

Nice tutorial you've got going. Is this going to be for an aliginate waste mold or silicone?

Say that's a nice fist you've got going there as well. I'm working on a Hercules piece and could use one of those right now. If you have too many copies left lying around, feel free to send me one!

Looking forward to seeing your next installment!

Take care,

Mud

cool tutorial dawg

How about a little narrative on why you are going from sculprty to wax? Is wax easier to work with? Is the hand completely done? Is wax the last step?

Obviously, I have never sculpted anything before ...
