What I like to do next is tip the mold slightly and rotate it thereby sloshing the wax around the inner walls of the mold. The wax sticks to the walls as it cools (rapidly I might add). This is done to help prevent shrinkage. If you were to just pour and let it sit and cool, it would do so, but be prepared as your piece may slightly or greatly warp and shrink as the wax cools.

This "roto-casting" helps create a layer to the inside walls that hardens. I repeat this step a couple of times before I finally just pour the rest in and leave it be.

This is me leaving it be It needs to be cooled before you pop your new wax copy out.

pop the tape off... or rubber bands and pop out your new and BEAUTIFUL WAX copy...

Compare it to your original. I barely had any shrinkage in this bad boy (wax copy on left... original on right) and couldn't be happier with the result. I can now take my details to the next level on this fist!!!

There it is... give yourself a HAND (heheheh) YOU DID IT!!!

I hope you can get some use out of this gang. This place has given me so much and I just wanted to give back. It might not be the best method ever... but it is pretty damn solid I think

Cheers...

Keith this is very informative - thanks.
With the silicone, is that easily available at places like Micheals or does it have to be ordered online?

Ordered online or by phone John...

Michaels shouldn't just have it... it tends to be a bit more specialized and higher end good!

"and Jon... absolutely you can pour whatever you want to in these molds. I've poured resin into these the same way before..."

Thanks for the great info.Would it be possible to make a cast of a small sculpture (say 6 inches tall) in one piece using this method?? Or 2, say character and base
