It's highly recommended, VR. If you can stand a horde of people in on one area that is quite huge, yet seems extremely concentrated for some reason. I normally try to get everything done on the opening Thursday, then hit Friday for as short of a period as possible to cover loose ends, then drive back to Phoenix soon after. It really is the highlight of the year for comic and statue nerds like us... on a worldwide scale.

I live in NY and go to the NYCC. That is pretty crowded as well. I am sure SDCC is 100x worse, but I don't mind. When events get packed like that is when you have the funniest adventures. Especially when confronted by the Ultra-Ultra nerd! LOL!
I will definitely be going next year. 
And NYCC is coming up soon!
