The Prince of Lan Ling is one of the four most handsome men in ancient Chinese history. Known as the God of War, he led his army into battle and vanquished his foes while wearing a fearsome mask to hide his face. His real name was Gao Changgong, a famed general during the Northern Qi period who is wise and loyal and treated his soldiers with admirable generosity and respect.

His most famous battle however was the rescue of the siege of Jinyong (金墉, near modern Luoyang) in 564 A.D. Gao Changgong led only 500 cavalrymen and fought through an army of Northern Zhou, which was attacking the city with 100,000 soldiers. He fought his way to the gates of the city, surprising the defenders. The soldiers of Jinyong didn't recognize him, so he took off his helmet and mask. The soldiers in the city rejoiced at his arrival and were refilled with courage. They opened the gates and joined the battle outside the city. Soon the army of Northern Zhou was defeated.

In order to celebrate the victory, the soldiers composed the famous song and dance "The song of the Prince of Lanling entering the battle camp? (兰陵王入阵曲). The Tang dynasty Record of the Court Entertainment Bureau (教坊记) states that the "Great Mask" dance was a court performance performed before the Emperor.

Chinese musician, Liu Qingyao, and Wang Jianan, a performer at the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater, released a video in 2020 of drum music featuring traditional instruments such as the Jian Gu drum and Chinese lobby drum.

Our chief designer QiSheng Luo, with Qingyao's approval, transformed the music into an art piece aimed at spreading Chinese culture using creativity and elegance.
