Naming your own kids: What are the limits of acceptability?

http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/-/w...dy-of-newborn/

These parents had their son Adolph Hitler taken away from them as a baby because they named him Adolph Hitler. The parents' judgment is obviously flawed (by current convention), but the question of "rights on naming your own baby" comes to mind.

What if someone decided to name their son Bruce Wayne? Or Kal-El? Imagine a Bruce Wayne Johnson* or a Peter Parker Johnson. Is that considered weird? Or do they have a freedom of choice? Why not "Aragorn Johnson" or "Kal-El Johnson"? Do names have to be typically traditional, i.e. Peter, Paul or Mary?!

(* Johnson used to illustrate a point)

Jason Lee's kid is Pilot Inspektor, so is this in the same level of weirdness?

Discuss.

But I have to say depends on if the name is going to harm the kid besides being picked on. But with naming you kid after Adolf Hitler I agree thats nuts. hell if you look at the kids names that people choose today most are nuts to me.. I grew up with guys named Chris,Russ,Jason,James,Scott and Mark etc etc now people give their kids screw up names Looking online here are the top 10 baby boy names for 2011

1. Jacob
2. Ethan
3. Michael
4. Jayden
5. William
6. Alexander
7. Noah
8. Daniel
9. Aiden
10. Anthony

when I was a kid 90% of kids with those names would have been made fun of .... Then again I am from the south and people do on occasion name their kid Bubba or Cletus here soo lol

Where I'm from, the common boys names were Kenneth, David, Christopher and Edwin!

Yes, agreed--Hollywood parents are nuts.

All those names listed above don't inspire HATE. A parent is NOT fit if they want to name their kids after the worlds most hated man! If this is allowed, then what's next? I'm going to name my kid fu^k you?

I've known a couple of people named Adolph/Adolf in my time. It's a perfectly good name, but to add "Hitler"... they're asking for trouble and endangering their child.

The majority of the names on that list are not crazy; in fact, if we have another girl, we're considering either Hazel or Violet. I suppose celebrities feel that they have enough $$$ to where the kid's name won't matter.

My name's Ryan B. (as in.. "be" ) Gay; I win.

My older sister is Jeffra B. Gay, and my younger sister is Elizabeth I. Gay.

We never had a problem with our names in school/etc.. didn't grow up when that was "an issue", and we all did sports/weren't shut-ins, had friends, blah blah... probably all helped.

... but I was almost William Wilson Gay IV; could've signed checks WWG IV like my dad does with a III.. my Mom blew it and said "no" (in retrospect, thank you Mom). Now I have no intention of keeping that name going, nor do my sisters.

my brother in-law just named his daughter "Chase" and then added to it with the middle name "Eric". I guess when you give a girl one conventional boy's name you might as well give them two.

I am old school and like strong names - William, Matthew and Vivian are my kids names.

Names are with you for life and whether you want to believe it or not, when you see something like a resume with the name "Wil-Yum" or "JeLeWilliam" or "Chicken Soup" or "Sunshine" people can and do form negative impressions even though it is unfair to do so.

I think parents should be able to name their kids what they want.
I also think kids should be able to kill their parents if they named them something stupid like say "ufckyou".
First day of school teacher asks what your name is kid answers ufckyou.

The names that Bags listed don't seem crazy at all to me!

My daughter is named Alexandra - and looking back through time it's always been one of the most 50 popular manes over time.

Clearly they are nuts, and therefore perhaps unfit to raise kids. I mean seriously...
