The Thicket (2024)
6.6/10
Juliette Lewis & Peter Dinklage, two actors i like, and the two reasons i decided to give The Thicket a whirl.
I guess the The Thicket could be described as the top end of good, the bottom end of great.
It's a difficult movie to rate, as it looks polished. Most of the acting is decent. There are many nice scenery shots,
usually involving snow, mountains, tree's and small Wild West style (wooden buildings) locations.
I am not too sure what the time period is. For the most part folk get around on horse back.
As far as i recall, two or three motor vehicles make an appearance.
Given the harsh environment The Thicket takes place in, i felt many of the characters looked too polished/clean/stylised,
maybe this was intentional?
There is a scene where Levon Hawke (Jack Parker) is involved in a bar fight. He is punched in the face,
his face is slammed againts a bar top, he is facing near certain death. Cut to the next scene, outside the bar in daylight,
he is standing by a horse, with a small bit on blood on his lip. No bruises? no black eye's, as fresh as a daisy,
ready to continue on with the journey? It's these small details the let the movie down, as it becomes less immersive,
and becomes a visual adaption of a book, without taking the viewer beyond the book and into the actual world of the original story.
One of the characters that appears reminded me of Metallica lead singer James Hetfield.
As The End credits rolled, James Hetfield was credited. I never knew James Hetfield was the acting type.
Juliette Lewis pretty much carries the movie.
Peter Dinklage is, Peter Dinklage, always delivering.
Esme Creed-Miles (Lula Parker) she's a talent.
