I'd guess for the part of King Nereus they're less concerned about acting ability than they are presence. He has an imposing look and he's an accomplished enough actor to bring something positive to what'll likely be a bit part. For all we know he might not even have any lines in the film.
In his defense I've actually been impressed with his acting on Arrow. Enough that I actually like the casting choice.

Confirmed that Ocean Master will be the main villain in the movie. I think they are going to base it in the Throne of Atlantis storyline, which would be a perfect way to start the Aquaman universe.

That’s awesome!
I wouldn’t say it was a belly flop though, at least not in the traditional sense as those are usually failed dives. Looked like he meant to go in the way he did. Still had to hurt though.

I am pumped!! Love that Aquaman is rockin’ the classic outfit and YES, Black Manta looks spot on. One of my favorite DC villains getting a faithful adaptation. At least visually. Can’t wait to finally see everything in action.
