I read that the swords came covered in slimy grease and that people worked for hours rubbing it off.

They are made of high carbon steel which is of higher quality and can actually be sharpened unlike stainless (what the LotR swords are made of). High carbon steel needs the greese so it is protected from ocean air on it's trip over from the factory.

The greese can easily be removed with WD40 and a clean rag.
