This has been on my mind all day too. This has been surreal for me. On Sunday night I stayed up watching the live results online from WrestleMania 30, as well as what was available on YouTube. Then, last night, I read that the Warrior had been on Raw, so I viewed his speech in the ring. Reading some comments about his appearance made me take another look at him, and I rewatched it. He had a tired look in his eyes, almost a sense of sadness. I figured it was just him realizing that his time in the sun was past.
Then, this morning, after a bunch of chores, I get online and go to the WWE site to look at some t-shirts for sale, just for the hell of it. I was wondering if there were any Ultimate Warrior items. I start looking at the shirts, when I decide to check the wrestling site I go to for info (411 Mania).
The first thing I see is the headline:
Ultimate Warrior Dead at 54.
I was stunned. Stunned.
Although I went back and forth as far as being a fan (being a Hogan fan I rooted against Warrior now and then), I never failed to get a charge out of watching him. His entrances were so exciting, so over the top. I remember seeing him live at the Worcester Centrum. Awesome times!
I just spent a couple of hours watching matches from the older Ultimate Warrior DVD I have, and a bunch of his promos and parts of the documentary. Mr. Perfect. Rick Rude. Elizabeth. Sherri. Macho Man. All gone. And now the Warrior.
Seeing the picture of UW and his two daughters escorting him to the Hall of Fame induction Saturday night is just too sad. Listening to his speech, he stated that the Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior DVD broke his heart, and that "I was a good person. I am a good person."
I know that he was a very strong-willed individual, and held firmly to his convictions. This is just my own take, but I bet he had a heart condition, like so many others of his era, and he willed himself to get through this final round. it's almost as if he got so worked up, so emotional about returning and finally getting the chance to say his piece at such a venue, that he gave his all, and then he had nothing left to give. Which is such a shame, for he left behind his wife and two beautiful young daughters, whom he obviously loved very much.
The Ultimate Warrior's not supposed to die. He's supposed to remain eternally young, battling and teaming up with Hulk Hogan, wrecking Rick Rude in the steel cage, and destroying the Honky Tonk Man in 31 seconds to win his first WWF title.
It sucks so much, getting reminded that you're not the only one getting older.
RIP, Ultimate Warrior.
