I don't think he's British at all.

No, I think you made a very honest, insightful observation about the nature of the hobby in its more extreme form. Obssessive-compulsiveness is certainly not a life-enhancing modus operandi.

Personally, I suspect that collecting allows us to exercise the control and order we wish we had in our lives. Simply wanting to be surrounded by artwork that gives us pleasure or recalls nostalgic childhood memories is one natural facet of the equation. But on an altogether deeper level, I often feel that our choice of the characters we collect is a fuller expression of our repressed tendencies and individual values - ones that often never get an opportuity to be implemented (for better or worse . . . .).

But it was different with him. He was scared of not having sex for so long that he just dove into a bunch of hobbies to take his mind of never getting any. So it's not really that he was just too busy and "into" his hobbies, he just wanted to be distracted enough to never think about it. That and sex isn't everything unless you really love someone which is sappy but I guess they had to have some morals in there.

I watched this the other night for the first time and it was awesome! It ranks up there with Wedding Crashers. My wife loved the movie as well except she got mad at all the scenes with boobies.
