Are DVDs/HD/BR worth buying?

I have this argument with my brother all the time.

I very rarely buy a dvd anymore, and never for a tv season that I've already seen (I call those repeats). About 90% of my dvd collection I've only seen once.

Now I can see buying Star Wars or The Lord of The Rings, but the majority of movies or tv shows I can rent or watch on cable.

What do you think?

No. Wait for a "winner" or when the player prices drop to the $150-$200 range. When i watch a dvd the difference does'nt matter unless there's a hd version playing right next to it. It's no big deal right now.

If your going to buy a movie that you watch more than once, yes they are worth it.

Although dvd titles are so cheap these days, watching them once can be money well spent.

Since investing in the format i have chosen i have not bought any new DVDs. The quality is crap in comparison. I would not advise you to chose one format over another but you should read up as much material you can releasing that there are exclusive studios on both sides. The picture and sound are very similar in quality so don't believe the hype that one is better than the other. But do try and pick up the movie with at least PCM sound track. The player should also have a 1080p output.

In investing in a tv 720p is fine up to around 32" and probably okay up to 40" but when you are getting up to 50" go for the FullHD - 1080p.

When you see High Definition you will realise that DVDs are so far behind its not even funny.

I`m the same B. I have`nt purchased a dvd since having Blu-ray. I also find it hard to watch the dvds I already own. Even the movies that I originally thought had great picture quality just don`t compare.

I love the Star Wars and LoTR films but looking at them on regular DVD to me its not doing the film juctice. A year ago i would never have thought that.

Blu-ray and Hi-def in general certainly changes your perspective of things.

I think some of you guys are reading too much into his question, I think he is just asking if it is worth buying movies in general regardless of format if you don't watch them that often not about upgrading to either format.

HD & BR discs are for a niche market similar to Laser Discs. I don't think they'll ever catch on the way DVD did. I think a good percent of people just aren't interested in switching yet again to another format. It took me forever to switch my VHS collection to DVD. Now I'm expected to switch my DVD collection to HD or BR? Yeah right.
