Canon Rebel XTi cameras for collections users thread

Thought it would be good to discuss XTi stuff with everyone on it's own thread. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. I ordered from Ritz Camera. It comes with the EF-S 18-55mm II lens. My 1st question is....what size UV filter should I buy? I'm thinking 55mm. Is that right?

you'll want a 58mm filter like this one.

Update! Ritz is telling me it takes a 58mm filter. That sound correct?

Is there a general rule of thumb for filter size?

i generally haven't "invested" much money on UV filters. you can spend a lot on them but i buy them mainly for lens protection.

That's what everything I've read says as well. I'm just curious about the size difference. 58mm filter for a 55mm lens. Always 3mm higher?

UV filters?!? This is getting way too complicated. I actually got a few with the camera package but haven't even gotten to them yet.

no, i don't think that's how it works. i have a two 50mm lenses. one accepts a 58mm filter and the other 72mm.
