Pat Gleason
Been a long while since I've posted but I had to share. I've been a fan of Pat for a long time since his Aquaman days. I've gotten some quick sketches & original art pages from him in the past. Was lucky to run into Pat again at KC Planet in Feb '18. Pat as usual was pretty busy. He was taking a small list at the show of course most were the typical Superman, Batman Super Sons stuff which is great. Then it was my turn, he asked what I wanted & I said well, what do you feel like drawing? He said he really wanted to do a Marvel character. I suggested Venom or Spider-Man. His eyes lit up & was like yeah, I got this. So fast forward to the last day of the show. He's not even started, He apologized but said he really wanted to do the piece. I said no biggie, I see him often. I went ahead & paid for the piece since again, I see him often.
Not going to lie. I did not expect what arrived in the mail 6 months later. I love it. Pat went way above & beyond what I was expecting. He didn't need too but did take an idea & completely blew it & me away. This is why I'll always be a fan of Pat's.

Love it, I have some sketches from Pat as well and we went above and beyond what I expected on them.

Pat is very underrated. That's a cover caliber piece.

Oh wow, that's amazing. I agree, cover quality piece right there.
Side note: sometimes, I actually like when artists ask if they can take pieces home and take their time working on it. There's inherent risk involved of course but worth it depending on the artist. I've benefited in cases where the artist has more time and just enjoyed creating the piece, thereby putting in additional work. I've also lost out in one case where I just never heard from the artist again. Fortunately, it wasn't a large transaction in this case.

I agree. especially in no money upfront or modest down payment scenarios. those can turn out to be really nice wins.

Yes, definitely a high risk high reward type thing. Def lost some pieces to the game doing this, but got some gems like one of my aforementioned Pat Gleasons and a Brian Stelfreeze that basically became at home commission quality.

Gorgeous piece - thanks for sharing. I love seeing art from artists not on my radar, especially when it is as good as this.
Congrats!

For sure! I haven't been burned by a con piece that ended up an at-home piece and almost always they are so much better this way. If you add in a little unexpected wait, the artist usually goes way above and beyond. I have a piece that was to be done this past weekend that ended up coming home with the artist and I am hoping for a great result.
