Comic Related Adult Coloring Books

Well, it seems that adult coloring has really taken off. Personally, I think its great as I got into myself a couple years back with these really beautiful kaleidoscope quality coloring books. It was just really relaxing and ultimatey a lot of fun. I got really excited when I started seeing comic related coloring books as I am just a HUGE fan of comic art and the idea of being able to color some of my favorite comic art is really appealing to me.

Anways, I was browsing Amazon yesterday and noticed that a whole slew of new adult coloring books are on the way and I figured this would make a great topic for a post so people can keep up to date on any new releases in the adult coloring book market that are related to comics. So if you see something that hasn't been posted, by all means post it up.

I just wanted to add a bit about colored pencils. There are actually lots of different levels of quality when it comes to colored pencils so it can be a bit confusing for beginners. A good mid level quality pencil is Prismacolor. You can buy a set of 132 colored pencils for roughly $97, although Dick Blick always has a 20% off coupon on purchases of $99 or more and 30% off purchases of $199 or more, plus free shipping on orders of $69 or more. So the Prismacolor set will set you back around $80 after the coupon. And you definitely want to get a set of blending pencils. Blending pencils allow you to combine colors and soften colors and edges. If your interested in the 132 tin set from Prismacolor, you can throw in a couple Prismacolor blending pencils and that will get you above the $99 figure at Dick Blick so you can use the 20% off coupon.

Here is a link to Prismacolor colored pencils over at Dick Blick:

Personally, I use Caran d'Ache and Faber-Castell. Thier really high in quality, but thier also very expensive. The Caran d'Ache Luminance line is amazing. Easily some of the best colored pencils I have used to date, but again they are expensive. A set of 76 is listed at $263 on Dick Blick, so basically it will set you back around $200 after the 30% off coupon. Thats actually a very good price. It used to be hard to find that set for under $250.

Here is the link to Caran d'Ache if your interested:

Faber-Castell's pencils are also amazing and thier a bit cheaper than Caran d'Ache. A set of 120 from Faber-Castell will set you back around $140 after the Dick Blick 30% off coupon (list price of $200), but Faber-Castell's Polychromos are some of the best colored pencils I have used to date. Thier simply amazing.

Of course, you can just go the super cheap route and buy a consumer level set for $15-20 bucks. You won't get the quality that you will with mid to high level sets, but your also paying roughly 1/5 to 1/15th the cost. It all depends on how serious you want to get and just how nice you want the end result to look. You can buy a set of 50 Crayola colored pencils for like $10. So really you can find pencils for as cheap as .20 each all the way up to more than a couple dollars apiece. It just depends on the quality your looking for and one of the great things about Dick Blick is they sell individual colored pencils for many of the artist grade pencils. So you can buy a couple and test them out without having to spend a fortune.

Whatever route you decide to take, make sure you buy some blender pencils and learn how to use them. Blender pencils are one of the best tools available for using colored pencils. They will make all the difference in the world once you learn how to use them properly.

Anyways, happy coloring and if you come accross any comic related adult coloring books you think are interesting that haven't already been listed, by all mean post em up. I will try and keep this thread updated as more books are released and given how popular adult coloring is becoming....well, I think its a sure fire bet were going to see a LOT more books produced in the coming months and years, especially from comic companies since thier already sitting on massive amounts of finsihed work. All they have to do is release that work as line art and they can make even more money from the artwork. So more books from comic companies is basically guaranteed at this point.

I made a thread about mine a while ago, but I think it was deleted. So, I stopped posting about them. I have all the comic based ones that have been released so far. They are a blast.

Oddly, I use Crayola pencils over my huge set of prismacolors and Tombow Irojitens volumes.

I also won second place in Zenescope's first contest.

Omg!!!! Thanks.
I did a search for coloring and couldn't find it. Is there a way they can be merged? I might have to share my collection now.

I remembered your thread, and just searched for threads started by you. I'm sure a mod can merge them.

Here is part of my collection. I haven't touched these yet because I have a few Johanna Basford books to finish first.

One I am currently working on...

I know, it looks like I am a hoarder, but I actually go through them fast. And I don't keep finished pieces, books. I just recycle them.

The reason I didn't just add this on to your thread is becasue your thread was specifically about the Avengers and Star Wars coloring books and I didn't really view it as a general comic based adult coloring book thread where more books would be added as they got released. Plus it was in the "other/general stuff" forum and I really felt something like this should be in the book forum. No hard feelings.

As for the whole pencil topic, the problem with the cheaper pencils is they don't blend nearly as well as the nicer brands. If your really into adult coloring, you really should buy a couple individual pencils from Faber-Castell or Caran d'Ache and just give them a try along with one of the blender pencils. The difference is just night and day. And you don't have to buy one of the large sets if you don't want. You can buy just 15-20 individual colors. It really just depends on how serious you want to get. Its one of those things tho where its very hard to go back once you get used to the higher quality pencils. Plus you can find really cool colors by some of those other companies. A great example is the metallic colors by Derwent. Those are great, especially for superhero related pictures. Oil based colored pencils are really cool too. There are just a lot of great and unique pencils out there that can really add to your enjoyment and make the end results look so much nicer.

Personally, I buy 2 of each book. One I keep just to collect and the other one I color. I also have all of the comic based books currently on the market and my favorites were definitely Batman Hush and Zenescope's coloring book. Didn't really care for the Harley and Joker book, which I actually forgot to add to this thread. Anwyays, as I said, it looks like there is going to be a LOT more in the future so thats very good news for people who enjoy coloring. Personally I can't wait for the 2 Wonder Woman books!
