Black Widow’ Director Says Film ‘Hands the Baton’ to Florence Pugh: ‘Propels New Female Story’

A long-standing rumor surrounding the upcoming Marvel movie “Black Widow” is that the action tentpole sets up Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova as a new superhero that will appear in future Marvel films now that Scarlett Johansson’s tenure as Black Widow is ending. The film’s director, Cate Shortland, more or less confirmed that’s the case in a new interview with Empire magazine. Shortland said that while her “Black Widow” film is a swan song for Johansson, it’s also a launching pad for Pugh in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland said. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

Fine with this. Marvel CU has to start swappin' out different actors for staid characters, whether it's with new versions or replacement actors like they do with James Bond & Sherlock Holmes, Spiderman. In the Black Widow comics, "Black Widow" is just a Russian' code name & she can be replaced. Having said that, I'd never have a problem with new actors playing Cap, Wolverine, Ironman or any character that the original actor has aged out of.

Good point but lots of things happen in the comics. Lots of dumb things. BW isn’t one of my favs so not like I’m staying awake at night over this. Agreed on the blu-ray.

Disney delays Marvel's 'Black Widow' until next year
Disney announced Wednesday that the highly anticipated superhero film starring Scarlett Johansson is being pushed back to May 7, 2021. The film was set to hit theaters on November 6.

Well that is bad news. Why doesn't Disney release it on Blu-ray in time for Christmas?

I hope this does not delay the release of the Hot Toys figures.

All of these major delayed movies need a bluray release. At this rate and the way things are headed they will never come out.

I don't know how Cinemas can weather this. Even running a skeleton crew you have fixed costs like rent every month and no new movies means sparse showings for months.
