When a group of workers goes on strike and i find out what they make, I am usually amazed at their relatively high rate of pay. From construction workers to dock workers, transit employees, etc., it seems to me that these folks make very good pay, and most have just a high school education, if that. I'm sure there are exceptions, but when I read an article like this, it really rubs me the wrong way.

Contrast this with teachers' pay. Hmm... there's a message here.

I think teachers should be making $70-$80 an hour. If teachers were making that kind of money, we'd likely have discovered new sources of fuel, have terraformed other planets, and goodness knows what else...

Good teachers are incredibly hard to find today. It just doesn't pay to be a teacher when people could make twice the salary pushing on/off buttons at a Pepsi assembly line.

Speaking for myself, some of my best (and most motivating) moments in life were teacher/student moments. Now, classrooms are nearly twice as big, ten times as dangerous, 30% prescribed, and vastly imbalanced intellectually. Most people today know full well what deal they're about to get by going down the "teacher" vocational direction. I sure hope things change someday soon.

I had no idea the rate was this much. As far as their walkout goes though I think it probably has less to do with wanting more $$ and more to do with 'retraining for other jobs'. That phrase can always open up a can of worms. I can remember a few years back a motion in our local school system to 'retrain' some of the teaching aides for other jobs. When all was spelled out, the system was wanting them to perform jobs usually performed by licensed nurses for special ed students. Of course, it didn't fly because of the legal issues surrounding licensed personal.

But whenever I see that phrase my instincts usually say run the other way
