I'm pretty sure it's the opposite, actually. Artists have a more accurate ability to identify if something is off, more than someone who doesn't sculpt or draw. I draw in my spare time and I know when my likenesses are off and need to scrap it. It's that attention to detail that differs from someone who isn't artistic, who looks at a sculpt and goes, 'eh, good enough, I know who it's meant to be'
Also just because you know how difficult sculpting is, that's no reason to settle for a poor likeness
