well you do have to take into consideration that lazer blasts and lazer swords can penetrate anything. except for deflector shields.
while it does offer some protection from battle. from what i understand is that the armor is more of a pressurized atmospheric space suit for traveling form ship to ship and planet to planet in space.
so they aren't exposed to harmful atmospheres on different planets and ships and the lack of atmosphere in space.
it would have been cool to see some of the troopers armor protect them some during the battles to some degree. and which they more than likely do.
its just that we only see them get blown away or cut down in certain scenes and never see how well the armor protects them. or its atmospheric capabilities.
we only see the atmospheric capabilities until the special editions came out. where we saw the troopers were outside of the Death star.
at least thats how i look at it.
