It seems like we rarely, if ever, see prices go down UNLESS someone tries to sell a piece after recently having acquired it. I think most collectors are probably better off trying to approach owners in a private sale.

Yeah the quick flip seems to be the biggest risk in art sales. At least for the average collector. I think it works out well for dealers that buy from HA and comiclink and then list it our their sites for a huge markup.

Although I do buy from auctions, many of my best pieces have come from private deals with other collectors. I generally try to convey my appreciation for the artwork, and show that I'm a true fan/collector rather than flipper. In turn, these folks agree to fair prices, for which I'm extremely grateful!
