Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns

Wow this sounds like a dream come true. Back in 1986 this was the book that spawned my interest in Batman and he's been my favorite super hero ever since.

In a perfect world this would get a theatrical release and an R rating. I know the latter is a long shot but you never know. Guess we'll see but they'd have to water it down considerably to pull a PG-13 rating regardless of it being animated.

It’s going to get rather crowded out there, with alternative Batmen cropping up left, right and centre. We’ll barely be over Christian Bale when a reboot will see another lucky young man dropped into the role, and there are plans for another, different Bats to appear in a Justice League feature. Add to this the various animated Batmen, from Kevin Conroy, Diedrich Bader and Bruce Greenwood.

Too much Batman? Or never enough?

Well, I think there’s always going to be room for The Dark Knight Returns, don’t you?

Bleeding Cool have heard from multiple sources (enough with the multiples already) that work is underway on a movie adaptation of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson‘s classic The Dark Knight Returns. As you might have guessed, however, this is to be an animated adaptation, much like the recent All Star Superman or in-the-works Year One.

Fittingly, Year One will come along first, but DKR is already in the early stages of development. According to our sources, several veterans of Batman toons past will be on the crew list, though we’re still trying to confirm who is writing and directing the film.

It would be sheer guesswork to try and determine when this might make it to the screen, but it isn’t going to be anytime soon. Here’s hoping they do it right.

Which doesn’t necessarily mean with a dry, determined insistence on copying Miller’s pages…

Is it too late to suggest Adam West in the role?

It's an animated adaptation which should still be good, as long they don't try to make it safe for the kiddies.

DC's been doing a great job with Under the Red Hood & All Star Superman. Can't wait to see this one.

My concern would be how much WB decides to clean it up for the kids.

Arrow UPDATE

Two Animated Features
Warners and DC are splitting up the adaptation of the dense four-part graphic novel into two animated features titled Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 and Part 2. The first movie, which will be released under the DC Comics Premiere Movie brand, will hit shelves in the fall. Part 2 will be released in early 2013.

Directed By Jay Olivia
Jay Oliva, who storyboarded Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman movie Man of Steel and who previously directed sequences of Warners and DC’s animated feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, is helming. Bob Goodman, a writer on Syfy’s Warehouse 13 and a veteran of many DC cartoons, penned the script.

Voice Cast
  • Batman/Bruce Wayne - Peter Weller (Robocop's - Alex Murphy)
  • Robin/Carrie Kelley - Ariel Winter (Modern Family's - Alex Dunphy)
  • James Gordon - David Selby (Dark Shadows' - Quentin Collins)
  • Harvey Dent/Two-Face - Wade Williams (Prison Break's - Captain Brad Bellick)
  • Dr. Wolper - Michael McKean (Smallville's - Perry White)
