I wanted the main characters from the original cover to be front view (don't want Cap to have his back against the reader!).
Byrne added Cyclops, Spidey, and Hulk at his own discretion and those are good choices! He also omitted those not in the original cover in his own.
It is does not detract from the story as the interiors had Dr. Doom basically playing around with the Marvel Universe like chess pieces so Byrne actually did a great job upgrading the characters.
