I remember reading somewhere that last year hey knew the show would pass the books so Martin have them broad plot strokes for all the characters and how he ultimately planned to tie it all up. If that's true, then we will definitely be getting all new material this season that could really spoil the books. I view them separately now though because there have been so many deviations but it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Yes, Martin is on record stating he told the show runners the ending of his book. He knew the show would outpace his writing. Fortunately he is devoting much of his time to finish the 6th book.

He also, recently stated there is a major twist done to a character the show has already killed off, so book readers won't be completely spoiled by the show.
