The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically.

Walk/run after dinner.
Cut your meal sizes in half, even substituting just fruits/vegetables for some meals.
Drink water... water water water! No cokes, booze, etc. Fruit juice has mucho sugar and calories. Milk... well, we can live with less.
Just be sure you get your vitamins!

What he said! Plus decrease carbs to the minimum possible and try to avoid them for dinner.

People recommend no soda, what about diet soda? No calories, but is there a negative I'm not seeing?

I agree with metalsquid, bodybuilding.com has a lot of useful advice.
The abs diet by mens health has some great info also. Just like any diet, it works for some and not others but it has lots of info on what foods to eat to help lose weight.
I tired a bunch of diets, but I never saw any real results until I dragged my ass back to the gym. Now I go 3 to 5 times a week, depending on the routine.
The first step is educating yourself. My advice would be to join a gym and talk to a nutristionist/trainer. Hopefully at least that way you are getting sound advice.
All the best.
