The problem with portrait switch-outs is i tend to stick with the one i like the most, leaving the other(s) in the box.
That said, on rare occasions, a piece can ship with two equally impressive portraits. The best example is probably the Sideshow Captain Marvel 1/4 piece. I like both portraits equally. The same applies to the Sideshow Domino PF

I generally stick to one switchout I like the best and the rest sit in the "Switchout Box" I made. On a rare occasion I will actually change a statue up but it's very rare once I get the look I like. I do like the option to choose as others have said. The regular may appeal to me and the ex is the better choice.

This right here....
Id much rather have the option and buy them, only if I want to spend the extra money. Most times it's baked into the cost and you just leave it in the box.

I think we grossly overestimate the cost of a switchout, vs producing 2 separate final products/SKU's.

Possibly true, though I see companies like Queen do this, with their iron spider for example.
Just tiered, with more switch outs and cost increases as you go up. It's awesome imo.

True, but then again, with Queen's prices, I don't think anything they are doing is about saving money

Really no more expensive than XM for 1/4 scale pieces.
Though obviously smaller footprint, so it balances out I guess.

Don’t like when the switch out head causes a seam.

If you saw a heat wave, would you wave back?

I agree that the switchouts stay in a box forever but I'd rather have the choice of which part to display. I might not like the piece otherwise and there's no guarantee when/if the next versions of some characters will be coming, it's just the option I appreciate and am happy to pay for

I think it comes to specific characters and options.
For example I was so glad Hawkgirl had a swap out head sculpt, but other characters it is either a nice bonus or unnecessary.
