Do you realize how many pieces of art or historical documents are copied so that the might be displayed while the original is preserved? If I go to see the Mona Lisa and am awed by the beauty of the piece and find out a year later it was not the original was I any less awed? If there is a one of a kind historical sculpt should it not be recasted in an effort to preserve it's beauty and ensure future generations can view it? Lastly, per capita doesn't it seem like there are a he'll of a lot of people with sculpting talent in the Phillipines and Brazil compared to the same area in ...say...Utah maybe? Or Sweden? What the hell is up with that???
Good points all... However, they are done for preservation purposes, and give all credit to the original artist...which like Erick says is key.

Also, like Erick says, many of us copy others' work in hopes to learn from and/or possibly improve upon them...generally not for profit, and certainly not (i hope) without crediting the original artist. I mean how many times do you see batman sculptures called the Jim Lee batman? And that's 2d to 3d... Citing your primary reference, especially if it's a distinct interpretation is just good manners... Attempting to duplicate someone's work without giving credit is-as Troy said- inconsiderate... And I would add- unprofessional... And just an all-around poopy thing to do. (yes, i said poopy)
Yeah, I noticed that whole talent location thing...interesting. Maybe them Utah-ians should get to work!

I would like to Thank Eric for letting everyone know about what was going on.

I also want to thank speedracer for taking action on the ----- forum very quickly once it was brought to his attention.

what was done there is totally wrong. I myself had a piece sculpted by one great sculptor and the concept and everything was "lifted" by someone else. I got it canceled and all is good. It is wrong to steal the intellectual property of another period.

i would like to know who commisioned this sculptor and gave him the referance pictures for sure so that I can personally ban them from the forum. I do not hold the sculptor as the responsible party, though he should know better, he was most likely feeding his family and I cannot fault a person for doing that.

Troy thank you for also taking the high road in all of this.

Mark... dammit man get to sculpting, Troy and his monkey are making you look lazy

Just saw this thread...totally not cool! Everytime I see a fake iphone made in china, there's this rage inside me asking WHY??? I agree with speedracer that poverty doesn't give u a reason to steal. Especially in this hobby where idea or creativity is 50% of the overall sculpt value.
Philippines may be a third world but it's not as bad as some of guys are thinking. The action can be out of desperation but it's still not justified. I'm sure this human behavior can happen anywhere not just in Philippines. I really hope whoever started that commission will come to his senses and realize what he's doing is totally wrong!
In support of speedracer, we apologize to Troy and Eric...
