James Cameron's films often have cutting edge effects, and that's part of their appeal.
For me, the appeal of Titanic was the effects and seeing the ship break up and sink, and how all of that was realised. Had to sit though a ropey 2 hour love story to get to that, but I enjoyed it overall. Lots of girls/women were attracted because of Leo and the love story, so it appealed to both sexes.
With Avatar, it was hyped because of the effects. I saw a 3d screening (which cost a lot!), but I cant actually see 3d, it all looks flat, so that was wasted on me! Some of the effects like the facial expressions/performance capture on the Naavi were good, but IMO it doesn't have the strongest story going.
The Force Awakens was enjoyable, but such a retread of what's already gone before. I guess that's what people want from sequels though, more of the same.
The biggest surprise on this top grossing list for me is Jurassic World. The fourth in the series, and just a retread of the same old story. It was fun, but I wouldn't have expected it to do as well as it did, I guess people really do love dinosaurs!
