I think these look great. Wish the PCS bases were this simple and uniform as that was the only thing keeping me from getting them. I’m sure we’ll see Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang in this scale like the Thundercats mutants.

I ended up doubling up on Donatello and got both versions. I've never really collected all 4.

Haven't you ever seen the box art for the TMNT NES game by Konami/Ultra? They have on all red. That cover from the game, is actually the cover on the 1984 comic book....only the comic book cover is in black & white. I have both mint & graded high.

Heh, I'll be damned...I did play the game, but didn't recall that detail. Though they did have different colors within the game.

Well...the first printing, yes - black and green and white.

The second printing of #4 IS that same color cover though.

The first printing is classic turtles art style by Eastman. While I like Eastman and Laird's styles, there are plenty of artists I like more. The second printing of #4 is done by Michael Dooney, and it is his iconic kick ass artwork of the turtles. Would love someone to do some statues in his style. And specifically THAT cover would make awesome statues!

So was it the video game or the cartoon that first gave them different colors?

Yeah, I agree 100% that the art from that cover, would make awesome diorama statues!... I thought that years back. The poses are top notch! (Especially Raphael) Maybe someday? Lol... Either way, these Iron Studio's one's are a great style too. If they weren't, I wouldn't of bought em'. I remember reading some comics where they had beaks back in the day. Those were the bloodiest!

I'm almost sure it was the cartoon (and/or the Playmates toys) that went to different colors.

The cartoon is the first appearance of the multi-colored masks. Eastman and Laird didn't create the change, but it found it's way to the comics eventually. There's a 'trivia' post for the original cartoon on imdb that states Laird made the decision, but that is false.

Toys and video games came after, although behind the scenes, the toy manufacturer (Playmates) might have been involved in discussions with the cartoon studio.

Michael Zulli? Maybe my third or fourth favorite artist (I only collected from Volume 1 (1984-1993)). He drew them like snapping turtles! I liked it as a change of pace. I still have that issue #31 in my collection!
