I've always held the rule that anyone in a skirt or dressed like a woman is addressed as 'ma'am' 'her' and 'she'; and anyone in pants or dressed like a man (that wasn't obviously a lesbian) should be called 'sir' 'him' and 'he'.
I used to get a transsexual in the restaurant I worked in, and I would chew out any waiter who waited on her that didn't refer to her as anything other than a woman. If they got too bad about it, I would just take the table from them. (Of course, it helped that I was a manager, but still! Human decency!)

Completely serious.
When I was 22 and just coming out of the closet, I made friends with a couple (Raul and Alfonso) they were a very wealthy order couple (yeah, I know what this sounds like, but it's not what you SICKOS are thinking) ... Alfonso (may he rest in piece) was a TOTAL theater and movie queen who had worked as a make up artist at Paramount and MGM in their hey days (you should have seen his collection of autographs), he knew everything about everyone .. and I'm talkin ALL the REAL DISH!! Well, Alfonso and I became fast friends, he took me to NY to see plays and movies that I would never have been able to have seen otherwise and introduced me to classic movies that I probably wouldn't have seen if it wasn't for him ... his love of theater and classic movies has stayed with me ever since.
So when I say I was trained to appreciate movies by a "true gay diva" I'm TOTALLY serious.

Jane Austen was kind of a naughty girl, wasn't she? Wasn't the sister-in-law in Sense and Sensibility named Fanny, as well?

Yup, she sure was.

I'm still not sure why anyone would claim Auntie Mame as a "their own" when it:
1) is terribly campy
2) had terrible acting
3) superficial plot and clunky dialogue
4) a half-hearted "message" in the movie that really doesn't go with the absurdity of what preceded it
and to think all this only gets worse when you cross into the John Waters realm.
Does being gay mean you have terrible taste in movies?

You do realize that the movie is based on a memoir, yes? By Patrick Dennis? Everything in that movie pretty much actually happened to Patrick Dennis when he was sent to live with his aunt, Mame Dennis, in 1923.
And I would think that as a gay man, you could appreciate the messages and colorings of feeling like a freak and being an outcast that's shown in Waters movies. That's what speaks to us.
I can't explain the love of camp. But it's definitely not having bad taste in movies, and I'm mildly offended that you put it that way.
